GMO- Determining Genetic Altering in Your Organic Produce

Category Essential Foods Created Date: 2013-03-18

What to look for when you shop for fruits and vegetables!

Next time you shop- look at the tiny sticker (if you can see it) and find out if its a
GMO- Genetically Modified Organism!

Here are the basics of what you should know:

• If there are only four numbers in the PLU, this means that the produce was grown conventionally or “traditionally” with the use of pesticides. The last four letters of the PLU code are simply what kind of vegetable or fruit. An example is that all bananas are labeled with the code of 4011.

If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “8″, this tells you that the item IS a genetically modified fruit or vegetable. Genetically modified fruits and vegetables trump being organic. So, it is impossible to eat organic produce that are grown from genetically modified seeds. A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) banana would be: 84011

If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “9″, this tells you that the produce was grown organically and is NOT genetically modified. An organic banana would be: 94011

Defining GMO: Organisms that have been created through the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). Over 60-70% of our world foods are genetically engineered. Have you ever gone to Florida's Disney World Epcot Center and ridden the 'Living the Land' attraction? Well this pretty much explains what GE is all about!

It's quite startling to think that even organic is now compromised by unnatural health risks. We spend our time trying to live healthy lifestyles by eating right and selecting naturally organic foods but GMO's make it even more challenging and defeats the efforts of even trying. With the threat of GMO's invading our natural produce, it makes one wonder: Is ORGANIC considered INORGANIC if its DNA is scientifically altered and controlled genetically? Is it still considered "natural"? Knowing what to look for when shopping for your fruits and veggies gives you a bit more ammunition now. As you can see our argricultural system is letting you in on it a little bit about the state of the vegetation produce future (as per the tiny font sized sticker label) but what good is it if you don't actually know what the code means!
Why should we care—When we are encountering or determining health issues for ourselves or more importantly during the early lives of our children, such as allergies, it helps to be able to pin-point the origin of the defect and it usually starts with what we are eating, what's in it and how it was produced.
